Many people asked MetaQuotes to develop a mobile version of Metatrader 4 for iPhone. Unfortunately, the mobile version of MT4 is only available for the Windows Mobile platform ( Smartphones and Pocket PC’s). However the good news is that Metatrader 5 will be available for Iphone and Google Android platforms! It was recently confirmed by MetaQuotes staff in this thread. The development of the Iphone app is progressing, and it will be probably released first. Bad news is that there wont be a version anymore for the Windows Mobile platform, Windows Phone 7 will be also avoided. I thinks this is because of the bad reputation Microsoft got with the countless bugs of Windows Mobile 6 and the drastic changes in code in the 7th version.

The Metatrader 5 Iphone app will feature a uniform design that will seamlessly fit in the Iphone interface. The app is developed from scratch and well be 100% native to the Iphone OS. Also, it will be different from the interface in Metatrader 4 Windows Mobile. The release date is not known yet. If the mobile version of Metatrader 5 is one of the reasons you will buy a smartphone, this information will help you to decide what platform to buy. I personally like the Android OS.

If you want to use Metatrader 4 on your Iphone, you can use tools that create a remote connection to your desktop, where Metatrader 4 is running. For example, you can use the TeamViewer app for Iphone, it connects to any PC around the world and you can remotely control the PC as if you were sitting right in front of it. You can also seamlessly use iPhone to login directly to your PC running MT4 using the PC2ME app. With PC2Me you can remote control of your Windows PC, using your iPhone via the Safari browser. There is also a Iphone app that allows you to monitor your Metatrader 4 accounts using myfxbook.com’s backend:

Actually, the remote connection to the desktop version of the Metatrader terminal is in some cases better than a mobile version of MT for the smartphone. On the smartphone you have always limited computing resources and not all features of the full version of Metatrader. For example, if you are using a expert advisor on your desktop, you can only control it via a remote connection. But if you want to quickly check the market quotes, the mobile version is better.

LiteForex group of companies is pleased to announce the new demo server launch intended for testing Metatrader-5, the next-generation platform.

MetaTrader-5 trading platform has been developed for working in Forex and CFD markets which is a big advantage for traders interested in both stock and currency tools.

Trading possibilities of MetaTrader-5 have been considerably extended as compared with the previous version of the platform: a number of orders has been increased and functionality of analytical tools optimized. It’s based on MQL-5, the new version of the MQL programming language that provides better possibilities for writing trading scripts and experts.

LiteForex group of companies offers its clients to appreciate all the advantages of this new program product and test the beta-version of MetaTrader-5 when trading on a demo account. After having been tested, the new platform will be fully implemented to work by its developer MetaQuotes Software Corp and will gradually replace Metatrader – 4.

You can open a free demo account via MetaTrader – 5 platform that can be downloaded at http://www.liteforex.org/mt5_demo. Your existing demo account can be connected to MetaTrader-5 as well.

About the company:

The well known LiteForex trademark belongs to Straighthold Investment Group. Placing financial active assets on the Forex international currency market, on world Stock Markets, on precious metals and Futures markets as well as providing brokerage services are among the basic activity directions of LiteForex group of companies

Step-By-Step Guide to writing an Expert Advisor in MQL5 for Beginners

Introduction

This article is aimed at beginners who wish to learn how to write simple Expert Advisors in the new MQL5 language. We will begin first by defining what we want our EA (Expert advisor) to do, and then move on to how we want the EA to do it.

1. Trading Strategy

What our EA will do:

It will monitor a particular indicator, and when a certain condition is met (or certain conditions are met), it will place a trade (either a Short/Sell or Long/Buy), depending on the present condition that has been met.

The above is called a trading strategy. Before you can write an EA, you must first develop the strategy that you want to automate into the EA. So in this case, let us modify the above statement so that it reflects the strategy we want to develop into an EA.

We will use an indicator called Moving Average with a period of 8 ( You can choose any period, but for the purpose of our strategy, we will use 8 )

We want our EA to place a Long (Buy) trade when the Moving Average-8 (for the sake of our discussion, I will refer to it as MA-8) is increasing upwards and the price is close above it and it will place a Short (Sell) when MA-8 is decreasing downwards and the price is close below it.

We are also going to use another indicator called Average Directional Movement (ADX) with period 8 also to help us determine whether the market is trending or not. We are doing this because we only want to enter the trade when the market is trending and relax when the market is ranging (that is, not trending). To achieve this, we will only place our trade (Buy or Sell) when above conditions are met and the ADX value is greater that 22. If ADX is greater that 22 but decreasing, or ADX is less than 22, we will not trade, even though the condition B has been met.

We want to also protect ourselves by setting a Stop loss of 30 pips, and for our Profit target; we will target a profit of 100 pips.

We also want our EA to look for Buy/Sell opportunities only when a new bar has been formed and we will also make sure we open a Buy position if the Buy conditions are met and we do not already have one opened, and open a Sell position when the Sell conditions are met and we do not already have one opened.

We have now developed our strategy; it is now time to start writing our code.

A little bit of history

As little as 5 years ago, the MetaTrader 4 terminal was officially presented to the traders, written completely from scratch and intending to replace the existing, and already popular, third generation terminal of MetaQuotes Software Corp. MetaTrader 4 quickly gained popularity among traders, and as a consequence, in the following years, hundreds of brokers began to provide their services on the MetaTrader 4 platform.

Despite this success, 3 years ago developers decided to create an informatory – trading platform of a new generation, and in November of 2009 the public testing of MetaTrader 5 had begun. We all tend to take a strong liking to the known and the familiar and take a cautious approach to changes. Traders are no exception to this behavior. Therefore we decided to help, all who desired, to understand the differences and advantages of the MetaTrader 5 platform in comparison to the well-known MetaTrader 4.

New markets and instruments

From the beginning, MetaTrader was intended to be a convenient and user friendly platform for trading on the Forex market. Today, it is difficult to even imagine that many years ago, in almost all other terminals, trade was conducted on demand, it was not possible to create your own technical indicators and trading robots, and opportunities for technical analysis were implemented more in words than actual actions. And so, traders who sold through other financial markets began to express a desire to sell through MetaTrader.

Recently the beta version of MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester was released. This program is the integral part of the MetaTrader 5 Client Terminal being designed for the purposes of testing and optimization of MQL5 Expert Advisors.

With the testing you can assess the qualities of your Expert Advisor on history data before launching it in real trading. Optimization allows choosing the most profitable parameters for your Expert Advisor making it a real efficient one. The Strategy Tester is an indispensable tool for developers of Expert Advisors. It is almost impossible to develop a profitable an error-free Expert Advisor without the tester.

As compared to the tester in MetaTrader 4, the new MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester is a more powerful and accurate tool. It has obtained the new function of distributed optimization that will be useful in work with compound Expert Advisors. Besides that, the Strategy Tester offers efficient testing of multi-currency Expert Advisors.

“The Strategy Tester is the last component from the set of required tools for efficient development of Expert Advisors. This set also includes the MQL5, MetaEditor, debugger and execution module in the MetaTrader 5 Client Terminal. The absence of a tester was the last obstacle to the wide possibilities provided by the MQL5 environment. We hope that together with the release of MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester, the number of new MQL5 Expert Advisors will sharply increase”, – Stanislav Starikov, the senior developer of MetaTrader 4/5 terminals and MQL4/5, said.

For each MQL4 function (except trading functions) the description and MQL5 implementation are presented, it allows you to reduce the conversion time significantly. For convenience, the MQL4 functions are divided into groups, similar to MQL4 Reference.

Introduction

Many developers have accumulated a lot of indicators and trading strategies written in MQL4. To use them in Metatrader 5, they should be converted to MQL5. It’s not so easy to rewrite all programs in MQL5. It would be much easier to convert them, if there were a translation-reference, and better with examples.

In this article I would like to suggest my version of a guide to migrate from MQL4 to MQL5.

An Expert Advisor or indicator that doesn’t use standard technical indicators in its code is rare. They are popular both for the beginners and advanced developers of trading strategies. It isn’t difficult to understand the details of indicator creation; the aim of this article is to help with it. We will consider the use of the functions for working with built-in standard technical indicators.

Fundamentals of Using Functions of Standard Technical Indicators

When being called, each function of a technical indicator creates a handle of the object created (indicator’s instance) with specified input parameters. The purpose of the handle is to assign it with this object. It’s quite sufficient to get the data from the indicator buffer and use it in your own calculations.

Creating a source file

To begin with our expert, let’s create it’s source file. We’ll do this pretty much as in the MetaEditor4 by calling the MQL5 Wizard from File -> New menu. On the first step select the Expert Advisor and press Next.

One of the upgrades brought by MetaQuotes to the MetaEditor IDE is the introduction of a debugger.

Across this article I’ll use the article ‘error’ as a reference to the conceptual code errors such as wrongly written conditions or wrongly written calculus expressions… Warning: don’t mistake them with the errors signaled by the compiler.

For the ones that don’t know , the purpose of the debugger is to run line by line to code in order to find conceptual programming errors, and to watch the values of the variables realtime.

In MT4, that lacked a debugger, the programmers were using the Print function to find the errors in the code, this being the single method available. This method is difficult to use and the time needed to find the error is way larger compared to using a debugger, because Prin needed a recompilation every time, re-attaching the EA and reading in logs. If we were calling functions giving a wrong result , because they were badly written, we had to go inside that function and attach Print lines to see where were the errors. After repairs, the code had to be cleaned up of redundant Print lines used to find the error.

Right now the debugger works only to test scripts, but we think it will be integrated with the Strategy Tester to work with experts. This is needed also because several buggy EA modules may be run only in rare market conditions, that will not appear while forward testing, but will be revealed while backtesting.

Now the things got simpler, from the same window you can follow the program being run line by line.

In order to use the debugger we have to call the DebugBreak() function where we want the normal execution stopped in order to start execution line by line. If we attach such a script to a chart, this will not stop running, as it will be stopped only if it’s started with the debug mode of the MetaEditor.

To start the script for debugging we have to press Debug->Start or F5 key or it’s dedicated button in the special bar dedicated to the debugger, bar which contains other 3 buttons for passing thru the code.

The group of buttons from the rectangle labeled 1 are the 6 buttons used at debugging. The first 3 buttons are getting in and out from the debug mode, but also to pause. The last 3 buttons are for passing the code in other manners, in the debug mode:

- passing thru the code by Step Into (F11) we go line by line but we enter the functions referred. For instance if we are with the cursor on the line ‘p=prod(a,b)’ and we push Step Into then the cursor will go into the ‘prod’ function and we will be be able to go line by line thru the code of this function;

- passing thru the code by Step Over (F10) we go line by line thru the code but the debugger will jump over called functions (these will be executed, but not line by line in a debug mode).

- Step Out should make the debugger get out of the function where the cursor is, and not close the debug mode, thing which is happening now.

The green arrow labeled with 2 is the current line. If we push F10 (Step Over), the arrow will move to the next line.

Running a code in the Debug mode a new page opens within the Toolbox pageframe, which is divided in two (areas 3 and 4).

In area 3 we see the name of the file that’s being run, the name of the function and the number of the line where we are in the debug mode.

Area 4 is similar to the Watch window from Borland C++ / Borland Pascal or other older IDEs , where can be watched realtime the values and types of variables.

In picture above in area 4 we have 3 variables which we follow : a, s and p. The variable ‘a’ has the value of 5 because we passed the line ‘a=5? where we are initializing it. The variable ‘p’ has the value 0, because this is the default value taken by the integer variables when they are defined, while ’s’ is undefined, because that’s the stop where the execution is stopped, right before it being declared.

These being said I wish you luck writing codes and debugging them.

When writing an indicator that uses the short form of the OnCalculate() function call, you might miss the fact that an indicator can be calculated not only by price data, but also by data of some other indicator (no matter whether it is a built-in or custom one).

Let’s make a simple experiment: attach the built-in RSI indicator with standard settings to a chart, and drag the True_Strength_Index_ver2.mq5 custom indicator to the RSI indicator window. In the Parameters tab of the appeared window specify that the indicator should be applied to Previous Indicator’s Data (RSI(14)).

It is a set of calculated values that we want to be displayed on the screen in a convenient way. Sets of values are represented in programs as arrays. Thus, creation of an indicator means writing an algorithm that handles some arrays (price arrays) and records results of handling to other arrays (indicator values).

Despite the fact that there are a lot of ready indicators, which have become classics already, the necessity to create one’s own indicators will always exist. Such indicators that we create using our own algorithms are called custom indicators. In this article we will discuss how to create a simple custom indicator.

Indicators Are Different

An indicator can be presented as colored lines or areas, or it can be displayed as special labels pointing at favorable moments for position entering. Also these types can be combined, which gives even more indicator types. We’ll consider creation of an indicator on the example of the well-known True Strength Index developed by William Blau.

True Strength Index

The TSI indicator is based on the double-smoothed momentum to identify trends, as well as oversold/overbought areas. Mathematical explanation of it can be found in Momentum, Direction, and Divergence by William Blau. Here we include only its calculation formula.

TSI(CLOSE,r,s) =100*EMA(EMA(mtm,r),s) / EMA(EMA(|mtm|,r),s)

Most Java coders will be familiar with the auto-generated documentation that can be created with JavaDocs. The idea is to add comments into the code in a semi-structured way that can then be extracted into an easy to navigate help file.

The C++ world also has a number of documentation auto-generators, with Microsoft’s SandCastle and Doxygen being two leaders. I decided to see how well Doxygen could document MQL5, which is in essence a customised subset of C++. To me this is an important step in the maturity of MQL5, because the complexity of the language is easily capable of fostering some quite large class libraries.

The experiment worked very well and I believe the help documentation that Doxygen produces from MQL5 code will add a great deal of value.

Here is a script which converts MQL4 code to MQL5 code was developed by Keiji and Circlesquares on the MQL4 forum.

First, download the following files and place them in your Metatrader 4 / experts / include folder

- mt4accountinfo.mqh
- mt4string.mqh
- mt4datetime.mqh
- mt4objects_1.mqh
- mt4timeseries_2.mqh

Now, download the latest version of the rewrite script and place it in your Metatrader 4 / experts / scripts folder:

- mq4to5rewrite_sample_v4_2.mq4

After that you will need to place a mql4 indicator, script or ea which you want to convert to MQL 5 in your Metatrader 4 / experts / files folder. Now open Metatrader 4 and run the script. As you can see you must first provide the name (without extension) of your mq4 file and select if it is an indicator (0), EA (2) or script (3) file.

In my case i’m rewritting a MQL4 indicator named ang_DCT:

Now hit the “OK” button and if everything is done, the following message will appear:

After that go to your Metatrader 4 / experts / files folder and you will find the converted mq5 file there:

Now open this file with Metaeditor 5 in compile it:

Try to fix the errors with the MQL4 to MQL5 Porting Table and the last version of the translated MQL5 user guide.

Finally we’ve got an opportunity to try the new trade terminal – MetaTrader 5. No doubt, it is noteworthy and has many new features as compared to its predecessor. The important advantages of this platform among others are:

Essentially modified language allowing now to use the object-oriented programming, still allowing to use the rich advantages of structural programming.

The code execution speed, which now is much faster than in MetaTrader 4.

Essential increase of possibilities for displaying the necessary information.

I will not list all of the new possibilities and features of the new terminal and language. They are numerous, and some novelties are worth the discussion in a separate article. Also there is no code here, written with object-oriented programming, it is a too serous topic to be simply mentioned in a context as additional advantages for developers.

In this article we will consider indicators, their structure, drawing, types and their programming details, comparing to MQL4.

There is nothing complicated in this article, moreover, anything of the considered here can be checked directly in the terminal using the attached files.

I hope that this article will be useful both for beginners and experienced developers, maybe some of them will find something new here.

Click here for the full article – http://articles.mql4.com/865

In MetaTrader 5 the history of quotes is stored only in M1 format (from 1993, before – D1 format) and all the charts are built based on it. When the terminal is first installed, the history is empty. The history is stored in \MetaTrader 5\Bases\Default\History\”currency”\ folder and has the .hcc (uncompressed) format. The history is transferred from the MetaQuotes’s server in a space-efficient archive format of data storing so for example the 10 years 1-minute history of quotes for GBPUSD takes around 10-13 megabytes, uncompressed around 100-150 megabytes.

In order to download all history for a selected currency and show it on the chart, first open the options menu, then charts and select “unlimited bars in chart” option.

After that go to the maximum timeframe of 1 month or 1 week and simply move your chart to the beginning and the history will begin to download. You can press the “Home” button on your keyboard and hold it until the download is finished.

According to MetaQuotes, the option to edit history and view history like in MT4 will be added later.
