Hotspot May 2010 Forex volume over $1 Trillion…

I know it’s a bit late yet this hasn’t been published yet so what the hell.

Hotspot recently released their trading volume figures and the numbers are simply astounding. During May 2010 Hotspot transacted over $1 Trillion total volume… May 6th was the most volatile with almost $90 billion traded in a single day.

From January 2009 to May 2010, Hotspot’s volume has risen over +350%.

All in all it seems that Hotspot at this point is the single largest forex trading venue in the world, however watching the chart below you can see that while EBS and Reuters lag behind CME is picking up pace. CME’s growth in May was much higher than Hotspot’s though I’m not sure how this even compares as CME’s business is mostly FX contracts and futures.

A little bit of history

As little as 5 years ago, the MetaTrader 4 terminal was officially presented to the traders, written completely from scratch and intending to replace the existing, and already popular, third generation terminal of MetaQuotes Software Corp. MetaTrader 4 quickly gained popularity among traders, and as a consequence, in the following years, hundreds of brokers began to provide their services on the MetaTrader 4 platform.

Despite this success, 3 years ago developers decided to create an informatory – trading platform of a new generation, and in November of 2009 the public testing of MetaTrader 5 had begun. We all tend to take a strong liking to the known and the familiar and take a cautious approach to changes. Traders are no exception to this behavior. Therefore we decided to help, all who desired, to understand the differences and advantages of the MetaTrader 5 platform in comparison to the well-known MetaTrader 4.

New markets and instruments

From the beginning, MetaTrader was intended to be a convenient and user friendly platform for trading on the Forex market. How do stop orders work in MetaTrader?

Buy stop, Sell stop and Stop loss orders do NOT guarantee an order will be filled at a certain price. Your specified price is known as the stop price. Once the stop price is met or exceeded, the order becomes a market order. Market orders instruct the broker to fill the order at the next available market price.

The execution price of a buy stop, sell stop or stop loss can vary from the stop price. This occurs most commonly during significant market moves or gaps. Often these price gaps are the result of economic news releases such as the US non-farm payroll report, and may also occur over a weekend when trading is closed. Keep in mind that in a volatile market substantial losses may occur and orders may not be filled as placed.

Retail forex trading grows by 16% in 2009, Hedge Fund volumes decline

Global currency trading volume declined 6 percent to just under $100 trillion last year, after setting records in 2007 and 2008, as hedge funds placed fewer trades than in previous years, Greenwich Associates said.

Trading by fund managers fell 23 percent in 2009, leading the declines among the 1,497 corporate and institutional customers surveyed by Greenwich Associates in North America, Europe and Asia, according to the Stamford, Connecticut-based financial-market research company. The drop was partially offset by trading at retail platforms, which grew 16 percent, and by corporations, which rose 10 percent.

“Hedge funds have been a major driver of FX growth for the last several years and when their volume slows down, and it did a lot, the market as a whole feels it,” said Peter D’Amario, a Greenwich Associates consultant in Stamford. “You haven’t seen the opportunities that are generating a need to trade. Reduced volatility has reduced opportunity.”

Foreign-exchange trading volumes dropped as market stability returned in 2009, following the unprecedented volatility of 2008, as financial system turmoil spurred an increase in activity among companies and large financial institutions.

Foreign-exchange volatility, a measure of risk implied by option prices, reached a 19-month low in April, a JP Morgan Chase & Co. index showed, after trading the highest level since at least 1992 in 2008. Options traders expected on April 15 that currencies of the Group of Seven industrialized nations would fluctuate by an annualized 10.47 percent in three months, the lowest since September 2008. It reached as high as 26.55 percent on Oct. 24, 2008.

MetaTrader Tips – How are pip values calculated?

A pip is the smallest increment in any currency pair. In EUR/USD, a movement from 1.0066 to 1.0067 is one pip, so a pip is .0001. In USD/JPY, a movement from 120.45 to 120.46 is one pip, so a pip is .01. How much in dollars is this movement worth, for example, per 100,000 Euros in EUR/USD? How much is one pip worth per 100,000 Dollars in USD/JPY? We will refer to the size, in this case 100,000 units of the base currency, as the ‘Notional Amount’. The formula for calculating a pip value is therefore: (one pip, with proper decimal placement/currency exchange rate) x (Notional Amount).

Using USD/JPY as an example, this yields: (.01/120.46) x USD $100,000 = $8.30 per pip.

Using EUR/USD as an example, we have: (.0001/1.0066) x EUR 100,000 = EUR 9.93. But we want the pip value in USD, so we then must multiply EUR 9.93 x (EUR/USD exchange rate): EUR 9.93 x 1.0066 = $10.00 per pip.

This is in fact a phenomenon you will see with any currency in which the quote currency is USD (such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, or AUD/USD): the pip value is always USD $10.00 per 100,000 currency units. If the pair name ends with something other than USD the pip value per 100,000 currency units will be slightly more or less than USD $10.00.

*The leveraged nature of FX trading means that any market movement will have an equally proportionate effect on your deposited funds. This may work against you as well as for you. The possibility exists that you could sustain a total loss of initial margin funds and be required to deposit additional funds to maintain your position. If you fail to meet any margin call within the time prescribed, your position will be liquidated and you will be responsible for any resulting losses.

MetaTrader is one of the most popular trading platform among presently existing. Wide configuration and control possibilities for brokers and a robust programming tool, the integrated MQL language for traders make the system handy and versatile in use.

The MQL integrated programming language is a C++ like language. Its concepts and syntax are familiar which allows the majority of programmers to conserve time resources during the learning phase. It is enough to grasp syntax and basic idea of the MetaTrader trading platform to start programming in MQL language.

By means of MQL language it is possible to create several program types:

Expert Advisors. The main goal for Expert Advisors is to carry trading operations in automatic mode following prescribed rules and by that freeing trader from the routine work. Expert Advisors can use in its work Custom Indicators and Libraries. Back Test Strategy Tester allows you to conduct strategy profitability testing on historical data which shortens development terms dramatically.

Custom Indicators. Classical indicators posses visual constituent as well as internal buffers to be able to be used in Expert Advisors. Non standard approaches are also possible though such as object usage, audio announcement systems and others.

Scripts. In distinction from Custom Indicators and Expert Advisors, Scripts allow you to execute some code once. This is useful for semiautomatic operation execution by trader. For example, open order with definite parameters or set Stop Loss Level for a new value. For each of new scripts it is possible to assign hot key, which makes script usage process fast and practical. Custom Indicators and Expert Advisors execute code only on price change on current currency pair.

Libraries. Repeatedly used functions and code pieces can be grouped into libraries. It is possible to use libraries written in MQL or in any other language. Using interface for linking external libraries provides traders with unlimited possibilities in their ideas implementation.

MetaTrader Tips – Understanding MetaTrader Charts

The current price shown on an MT4 chart is the bid price. When looking at a price bar or candle, you must add the spread to the high bid price to know what the high ask price would have been, or add the spread to the low bid price to know what the low ask would have been.

If you are in a sell (in at the Bid out at the Ask), you would not see the candle reach your stop loss if you are taken out of the trade. For example with a stop loss of 1.4580 on the EURUSD once the chart reached 1.4578 (2 pip spread) you would be taken out of the trade at 1.4580. Your take profit would not trigger until the ask price hits. For example with a take profit of 1.4540 on the EURUSD once the chart reached 1.4538 (2 pip spread) you would be taken out of the trade at 1.4540. These examples are based on our spread shown under normal market conditions. Our spreads are not fixed and will fluctuate with news or other high / low volume conditions.

If you are in a buy (in at the Ask and out at the Bid), you will see the bid price on the chart.

MetaTrader Tips – Trade Context is Busy Message

You receive the “Trade context is busy” message when you try to process two or more orders at the same time. If you have placed a trade and do not wait until it processes completely and then try to place the same trade or a different trade, the commands go into a loop and you get “Trade context is busy”. The only solution is to close down the platform and restart it.

First broker to use MetaTrader 5 – Alpari Russia

Metatrader 5 Development – Interview with Stanislav Starikov

The new Metatrader 5 platform and the MQL5 language are nearing the end of development and will be probably launched in fall 2009. MT5 will replace MT4 and the new code is completely written from scratch. The bad point is that MT5 will be not compatible with MT4. This means that every indicator and expert advisor needs to be rewritten to work with the Metatrader 5 platform.

Interview with Stanislav Starikov, leading programmer of Metatrader 5

Q: Stanislav, there are several topics in forums about the development of a new platform MetaTrader 5 and the MQL5. Could you, please, tell us about this?

A: Really, the development of the new trading platform is in full swing. And MQL5 development is its closing stage. And like the previous time with MQL4, we are going to release the development environment MQL5 earlier than the client terminal, so that traders can get acquainted with all new possibilities of our language.

Q: And what are its new possibilities?

A: First of all, it includes new data types, a new structure, classes and, in this respect, the object-oriented programming. We also introduced projects and considerably increased the program execution speed.

Q: Please, tell us about the new data type. What for are they introduced in MQL5?

A: In MQL4 we had three main data types: INT, DOUBLE and STRING. Now we have added new types: CHAR, SHORT, LONG, FLOAT, STRINGS became Unicode. We also added STRUCTURES and CLASSES. What for are we doing this? In programming languages like C++ such data types already exist. And now it is much easier to transfer source codes written in C++ into our MQL5.

For example, the winner of the championship 2007 (Better) told in his interview that he developed his EA in C++ and after debugging it he transferred the code into MQL4. Now all this will be much easier to do. Besides, already in MQL4 we included the possibility of using Windows API functions or functions from other DLL’s. Very often such functions may be of these structure types. And now we made such calls easier, meaning, we made working with MQL5 easier.

Q: What are CLASSES and Object-oriented programming?

A: A CLASS is the same STRUCTURE, but with added functions for processing data of this STRUCTURE. It allows hiding functionality, i.e. all these FUNCTIONS inside a CLASS; And a program now can be constructed out of CLASS OBJECTS like out of bricks. First of all, it simplifies programming, i.e. it becomes easier to write such programs, to read such programs and to modify such programs in the future. And consider the situation when Programs become larger and larger. In this situation CLASSES will be of great help.

Q: Could you please tell us about PROJECTS?

A: As I have already said, programs are becoming more and more complicated. In this respect, it is reasonable to divide a source text into several files. For example, one file for each CLASS. PROJECTS introduced into MQL5 allow assembling a ready program out of these files. This is also a great help in writing a program.

Q: Stanislav, you have said that you increased MQL5 program execution speed. How did you manage to do this? Well, in MQL4 the speed was rather high.

A: Tell you the truth, we had reserves. Actually, in MQL4 a compiler gets an interpretable byte code. In MQL5 we also get a byte code, but like in >NET during the code uploading, this byte code is transformed into a native x86 code, i.e. processor commands. So as a result, the program in a native language works much faster than any byte code. Moreover, we invested much time and effort into the question of code optimization. Thus we managed to speed up the program execution.

Q: Can you tell how much higher the program execution speed will be in MQL5 as compared to that in MQL4?

A: No, I can’t tell this right now, because we haven’t conducted objective tests yet. But I can tell for sure, that the speed will be several times higher. Well, wait for news.

MetaTrader 4 Tips

Make sure that the MT4 (MetaTrader 4) is running on a computer which is connected to internet all the time. This is important because MetaTrader 4 and the expert advisor is not running on your broker’s servers. Many of the functions of EA or forex software can be performed successful only if it is constantly connected to the internet. For instance, if you have set a trailing stop, MetaTrader 4 will send out a command to your forex broker account to move the stop each time and hence the MT4 along with your autopilot forex software need to be connected to the world wide web all the time.

So if you have installed your forex platform along with your Forex EA on your home computer or laptop you have to leave it online 24 hours from Sunday night thru Friday to make the most of the potential of a MetaTrader 4 expert advisor. Otherwise you need to exit all of your trades before you disconnect your computer from the internet any particular trading day.

An interruption in the connection will result in failure of synchronization between EA and forex broker account. That means no more instructions are sent to your broker account and as a result the trailing stop will be left where it was last positioned. This situation might still protect you from a heavy loss but it will not move up automatically any more. But do not worry, you have another option to overcome this problem.

Some of the best forex software or EAs can be hosted on remote servers. That is, instead of using your own computer you can install the EA and set it with the forex platform on a computer of the service provider which is always online. We believe the MetaTrader 4 (MT4) forex trading platform is one of the best and most comprehensive trading and charting platforms available today. Many forex brokers use the MetaTrader 4 platform for their trading platform. There are many MT4 expert advisors (EAs) and trading indicators that easily plug into the MetaTrader charts and that makes it much easier for traders to find and use strategies specifically designed for it. You simply copy the expert advisors and/or trading indicator files into the appropriate directories and restart your MetaTrader 4 charts and that’s it. Then you click the menus in the MT4 charts, pick your EAs or indicators and they will automatically function in your charts. There are thousands of free expert advisors (EAs) and trading indicators to choose from and they’re all over the internet and forex trading forums. The downside with many of the free MT4 EAs and Idicators is that there’s a lack of documentation and learning to use them can be time consuming and difficult. But if you don’t mind playing with different settings and have the time to learn them, they can be a great way to make some very profitable trades.

There are also some great ebooks out there that supply their own expert advisors (EAs) and trading indicators that include all the documentation and examples to successfully use the trading strategy for maximum profits.
